Toyota Safety Sense came about because Toyota has long made safety a top priority, well before unveiling one of the world’s most renowned driver-assist systems. The company has a dedicated division focused on advancing safety technologies. In 2011, Toyota introduced the Collaborative Safety Research Center (CSRC) to further its efforts in mobility safety. Since its founding, the CSRC has partnered with universities, hospitals, and industry experts to discover new ways to reduce crash injuries, gain a deeper understanding of driver behavior, and help prevent accidents. The results have been remarkable.
Toyota Safety Research Center Completes 100th Project
Toyota’s CSRC is highly focused on research that aims to reduce collisions. Since accidents can have life-altering consequences, every advancement that helps protect vehicle occupants represents meaningful progress. On June 3, 2025, Toyota announced that its collaboration with the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) AgeLab resulted in the CSRC’s 100th completed research project.
Reflecting on this milestone, CSRC Director Danil Prokhorov called it “a significant milestone for CSRC and our commitment to pursuing Toyota’s vision of a future safe mobility society for all with the ultimate goal of zero traffic fatalities.” The project with MIT looked at how drivers and pedestrians interact with technology such as mobile devices and in-vehicle touchscreens.
The 100th project, supported by MIT AgeLab scientist Dr. Bryan Reimer, showcased the close partnership between Toyota and MIT. The research offered important insights, including data on voice-based human-machine interaction and driver-pedestrian dynamics. The team also studied how driver-assist features shape behavior and how drivers handle tasks not related to driving.
Toyota’s research center is already preparing for its next 10 projects. These future efforts will involve collaborations with the University of Waterloo, Oregon State University, Ohio State University Injury Biomechanics Research Center, and Auburn University. For now, Toyota is celebrating this key accomplishment while focusing on how these new findings can help make driving safer for everyone.
