Image: 2026 Toyota Highlander Now Offers Standard All-Wheel Drive on Every Trim

Toyota has made all-wheel drive (AWD) standard across all 2026 Highlander trims. This three-row SUV strikes a balance between comfort and capability, making it well-suited for everyday driving as well as longer trips. The AWD system works with a turbocharged engine and automatic transmission to deliver confident performance in a variety of conditions.

All-Wheel Drive With Enhancements

The 2026 Highlander’s AWD system is built to handle changing road and weather conditions. Normal Mode is ideal for daily use, Eco Mode boosts efficiency on highway drives, Sport Mode sharpens response for more spirited handling, and Snow Mode improves traction on slippery surfaces. Multi-Terrain Select adds further flexibility with Rock & Dirt and Mud & Sand settings for challenging terrain. Safety and control are supported by features like Vehicle Stability Control, Trailer Sway Control, and Dynamic Torque Vectoring, which enhances cornering and grip.

Other Powertrain Highlights

Powering the Highlander is a 2.4-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine producing 265 horsepower and 310 pound-feet of torque. It’s paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission with Direct Shift engineering for smooth gear changes. Fuel economy is estimated at 28 mpg on the highway and 21 mpg in the city, and the engine runs on regular unleaded fuel. When properly equipped, the Highlander can tow up to 5,000 pounds.

The SUV’s suspension system includes an independent front suspension and a multi-link rear setup for stability. The XSE trim adds a sport-tuned suspension for a more athletic feel, while a trailing-wishbone design strengthens chassis performance. An electronic parking brake adds further convenience.
