Ā Ā Toyota knows that solar energy is destined to play a major role in our future. As a cleaner replacement for the fossil fuels that powered the last one hundred years, solar energy is important for safeguarding the environment. To applaud this creative and sustainable power source, Toyota has opened the Vivid Solar Sculptural Display to the public at its Research & Development office in Michigan.
Vivid Solar Sculptural Display Helps Harvest Energy
Designed in partnership by Toyotaās Advanced Product Planning Office (APPO) and the Toyota Research Institute of North America (TRINA), this striking model beautifully blends solar architecture with vivid styling. Far from being just a piece of modern art, the project actively gathers power. Finding independent green energy sources is key to protecting our contemporary society as old fossil fuel reserves dry up.
Constructed at a 1/6th fractional scale, this carbon-neutral, self-contained installation is made up of 11 triangular columns. Utilizing lenticular lens patterns, the creators successfully hid the solar cells while protecting their generation capability. In short, the sculpture serves as a stunning work of public art and a helpful eco-friendly breakthrough that generates actual electricity.
The early roots of this advanced concept go back quite a bit. While the project request came down in 2020, the underlying engineering had been in development for over a decade. Co-project leader Songtao Wu, a senior principal scientist in the Materials Research Department, explained that TMC began experimenting with nanotechnology-driven dynamic color pigments 12 years ago, planning to use them for solar panel networks.
While funded by TMC, APPO drove the concept forward for the North American market, managing corporate finances and advocating for standard production. Today, this Vivid colored-panel engineering can be integrated into regular solar arrays while maintaining more than 90% of the panels' original efficiency levels.
Co-project leader Brian Woods is highly enthusiastic about seeing this Vivid Solar technology materialize. "When you take into account both sign and marketing opportunities, there is excellent ROI potential for this setup," he explains, adding that this innovative tech matches an eco-conscious power design with infinite corporate branding options.
