Maintenance is a normal part of vehicle ownership. It's especially important to maintain a regular maintenance schedule to keep strange sounds at bay. If you start noticing strange sounds coming from your car, it could be an indication to underlying mechanical problems. Here are some common car sounds that you may notice, and what these sounds may mean for your car's performance.

Squeaky Brakes

What do squeaky brakes mean? Squeaky brakes are often a sign of worn-out brake pads or rotors. Sometimes worn out parts may need to be lubricated, but they may also require replacement. If you've noticed your brakes are squeaking, even a little, it's best to bring your car in for a brake check.

Engine Rattling

Commonly, if you hear a rattling noise from the engine, this is likely due to premature ignition. The engine may ignite prematurely when it is overheated, has ignition timing problems, or poor fuel octane rating. Any of these issues can cause air and fuel mixture problems, leading to premature ignition. Over time, this issue can damage several engine parts, such as connecting rods, valves, and pistons.

Engine Clicking

When the engine is emitting a clicking sound, it's can be a result of low oil level. Going too long without an oil change can cause a lot of damage over time, so if you notice this sound, it's time to check your oil levels. Check the levels yourself, or bring your car to our service center for a diagnosis. A clicking sound may also occur when the upper valvetrain malfunctions or is worn out. For example, this can happen when there is too much valve lash.

Knocking From Under the Hood

This knocking sound is generally an indication of something serious, and you should bring your car to the mechanic as soon as you can. The knocking sound could indicate damaged or broken parts, including the pistons, valves or connecting rods in the engine.

Engine Squealing

If the engine is making a squealing sound, it could be caused by several issues. For older cars, a loose or worn out accessory belt is often the issue. Accessory belts are responsible for properly functioning air conditioner compressors, alternator, and power steering pumps. Newer car engines may make a squealing sound when the serpentine belt is loose, worn out, or in need of adjustment.

All of these car sounds can be signs that your vehicle needs servicing. If you hear one or more of these sounds, bring it into our Toyota dealership so our expert technicians can help get your car back in its proper condition.
