Image: Cirba Solutions Helps Toyota Expand Battery Recycling Network

Toyota is deeply committed to safeguarding the environment's health, extending well beyond the focus on electrifying its vehicle lineup. The improper disposal of automotive batteries can significantly harm the environment. Sadly, numerous batteries end up in landfills, exacerbating the pollution issue. Moreover, these end-of-life batteries contain materials that could be repurposed. To address this, Toyota has teamed up with Cirba Solutions, a company with over 60 years of battery recycling expertise. Cirba Solutions manages everything from collecting old batteries to transporting and extracting crucial elements.

This collaboration between Toyota Motor North America and Cirba Solutions expands the automaker’s recycling network for BEVs, PHEVs, and HEVs. Cirba Solutions boasts an impressive 95% recovery rate for extracting critical elements. This partnership not only reduces costs for Toyota but also brings the company closer to achieving its closed-loop objective for battery recycling. Recently, Cirba Solutions received a substantial grant from the U.S. Department of Energy, enabling them to enhance their facility in Lancaster, Ohio. This facility will extract battery-grade materials from end-of-life batteries, reintroducing them into the supply chain for future use in EVs.
