Toyota All Wheel Drive Vs. Four Wheel Drive

Ā

Many vehicles are sold with many features. Depending on the model, you may be able to select between AWD and 4-WD. Many people mistakenly believe that they are the same thing. However, they are different systems. While it can be confusing, understanding the differences between these two systems can be overwhelming. Let's take a look at each one so you can make an informed decision about the right vehicle for you.

What is All-Wheel Drive, and What Are Its Benefits?

All-wheel drive means the powertrain drives both the front & rear wheels. A full-time AWD option allows you to move all four wheels at once. A part-time system works in its two-wheel mode but will switch to AWD when it is necessary.

AWD features work without the driver even having to activate them. However, some models provide additional control options. Through a variety of differentials and couplings, all of the wheels will be given torque.

What is Four-Wheel Drive Exactly?

Ā

Four-wheel drive can be found on larger vehicles, like trucks and SUVs. It utilizes a combination of set differentials in the front and center and a pair of transfer cases to transfer power from all four wheels.

4WD can send torque to all four wheels, just as AWD. You can also choose between low or high speeds when driving. This is typically done via an electronic switch (or a lever). You can use the lowest setting to achieve maximum traction for roads with few slick surfaces like gravel, snow, and sand. The highest setting is for those that have slicker roads.
