2021 Toyota Avalon

What's New for the 2021 Toyota Avalon?

The 2021 model year welcomes a multitude of changes for Toyota's flagship sedan, the Avalon. Still new into its fifth generation of production, the Toyota Avalon-available in gasoline and hybrid variants-has two new trim levels (the black-accented XSE Nightshade and the racing-style TRD), standard Android Auto for smartphone integration (in addition to Apple CarPlay), and the choice of an all-wheel drivetrain (albeit with a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine instead of the standard V6 engine).

Which Trims & Features Are Available in 2021?

In addition to the XSE Nightshade and TRD, the 2021 Avalon offers the base XLE (a notch below the XSE model), Touring, and Limited, with the TRD functioning as the new top-of-the-line trim. The hybrid is available in XLE, XSE, and Limited models. A five-seater, this large vehicle has an Entune multimedia system that integrates-in addition to Android Auto and Apple CarPlay-eight speakers, an AM/FM/HD Radio tuner, three months of SiriusXM Radio, Amazon Alexa for virtual assistance, five USB ports, a Wi-Fi hotspot, and a 9-inch touchscreen.

Other comforts and convenience features on the 2021 Avalon include:

  • Proximity keyless entry.
  •
  • Push-button engine start.
  •
  • A dual-zone automatic climate control system.
  •
  • An auto-dimming rearview mirror.

The XSE trim level-be it the Nightshade gasoline model or the hybrid model-welcomes a pad for wireless mobile charging, a power moonroof, and a garage-door opener. Only the Touring has a 10-inch head-up display, a navigation system, and a 14-speaker JBL sound system. Notably, the luxury-oriented Limited is the only trim with leather seats.

2021 Toyota Avalon Powertrain Options

For years, the Avalon has run on a big V6 for ample acceleration ability, and the most recent workhorse displaces 3.5 liters and puts out 301 horsepower. There's the option, though, of going with a smaller, 205-horsepower 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine for improved fuel economy, and it is accompanied by all-wheel drive for improved performance on slippery surfaces. Each gasoline powertrain configuration features an eight-speed automatic transmission for smooth shifts. On the hybrid, expect the combination of the 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine with a pair of electric motors and a continuously variable transmission for an output of 215 horsepower.

Safety Features in the Forefront for 2021

For driver safety aid, the 2021 Avalon chiefly relies on the Toyota Safety Sense P (TSS-P) collection of technologies that includes adaptive cruise control, automatic high beams, pre-collision warning with pedestrian detection, and lane departure alert with steering assist. Also standard are a rearview camera, a blind-spot mirror, and a rear cross-traffic alert. Ten airbags are present to help protect against injuries in a crash.
